Superted

ROTTEN BADLY-DRAWN romp that began life as a mascot for the South Wales Electricity Board and should’ve stayed there. Teddy bear in factory was found to have “something wrong with him” and thrown away “like a piece of rubbish”. Then a “spotty man” brought him to life with “magic dust” and… well, you can see how desperate it all was. DEREK GRIFFITHS voiced the title role, JON P’TWEE was “Spotty”, and ROY KINNEAR and MELVYN “HOT MUM” HAYES were fat/skeletal henchmen to Texas Pete. Effortlessly irritating.

Some of Texas Pete’s plans were fairly loopy, IIRC.

There were a few story books, possibly pre-dating the cartoon.

Living in a S4C fringe area it was really odd to watch this in Welsh, especially the end theme.

Superted’s magic word was in fact a swear word, that’s why he wasn’t allowed to say it out loud.

Anyway, “badly drawn”? It was a hell of a lot better drawn than Bananaman. Only problem was the characters were constantly moving around, presumably to stop the animators getting bored, but it was a really polished show, visually.

Totally agree with THX 1139. This was not a badly drawn show at all – the animation was bloody good for a British kid’s show of the time. Just compare it to a pisspoor ITV cartoon like Alias the Jester from the same era and there’s no comparison in quality!

Superted was also Weston-Super-Mare’s mascot for a brief while in the early nineties.
