Star Turn

KIDS CHARADES programme presented by the mighty BERNARD CRIBBINS. Essentially GIVE US A CLUE with added rounds to mime things in the manner of certain adverbs, theatrical genres, TV series and so on. For the record, after the preliminary charades, they’d get on to the Ivor Notion whodunnit, with each “celebrity” playing a part while wearing an appropriate hat. Bernard himself was always Ivor and wore a deerstalker, which he’d turn 90 degrees in the middle of the abovementioned timeless phrase :”Suddenly, Ivor Notion” – turn hat – “had a notion”…

Cribbin’s finest hour in front of the camera. He worked the manual cardboard flip-over scoreboard & was happy to bend the rules & give bonus points to a team, just because he could. The show would always end with the lights dimmimg, then Cribbins throwing his question cards in the air. You wouldn’t see Parky doing that !

I seem to recall this show was called Star Turn Challenge. Did it alter its name like Star Test did? What we need is CBBC Gold to watch all this stuff again. Oh yes. I used to enjoy Star Turn a lot.

I wonder if the charades part inspired Give Us A Clue, which long outlasted Star Turn. Otherwise a fairly ho hum programme that was as cheap as chips to make and seemed to feature Graeme Garden quite a lot.

Arthur Askey did it, which seems almost impossible, but then one realises that it’s about the same amount of time between then and now as it was between then and Askey’s heyday.

It seemed to feature people as diverse as Nerys Hughes and Willie Rushton. I think anyone who was walking past the studio and was recognisable to a young audience must have been asked to take part. Yes it was cheap, some people found the Ivor Notion part a bit tedious, but Star Turn’s main appeal was its element of surprise. Now then, Nerys, pretend you’re running for the bus.
