Sport Billy

ODD CARTOON kid of vaguely Hispanic origin battles evil green Queen Vandar and snivelling gnome-like henchman who want to “destroy all sport” for some reason. Different sport each week. Eventually they ended up doing things like lacrosse, for fuck’s sake, but interest had long since waned.

There were Ladybird books available, and they looked like they’d been drawn by the cheapest comic artist they could find. Even the colouring looked as if it had been done with a pack of Superdrug felt tips.

I remember having one of those Ladybird activity books, which were a format bending A5 size. Some of the puzzles were a challenge to get right, but were usually fun.

The cartoons where an OK way to kill time on a summer holiday morning, but weren’t repeated as much as some less deserving cartoons. SB used to travel in a craft shaped like an alarm clock & had one of those bag of holding that seemed to carry any kind of sports equipment relevant to the plot.

One boy I was friends with at school looking a bit like Sport Billy & eve had the same initials!

The above comment reminds me of how The Beano sometimes used to get another artist for a strip when the usual one was unavailable, sometimes with the writing getting a but iffy too. Mostly it was easy to tell it was someone who drew one of the other strips, but occasionally it was one of their irregular artists who made the strip look like some loopy fan creation.
