TV: R is for...

Roxy, The

AN ITV alternative to TOP OF THE POPS? Surely it could never work? And set in a pretend “nightclub” (we’re talking Hippodrome here, rather than Trade) hosted by DAVID JENSEN with unknown-then-and-now KEVIN SHARKEY? Get out of here! Sure enough, after just 18 months it did. They didn’t try that again.

    “They didn’t try that again.”

I presume CD:UK doesn’t count as an ITV alternative to TOTP because, among other things, it was aimed at a younger audience and shown at a completely different time of the week…

Kevin Sharkey turned up in an episode of Father Ted as a (what else?) priest.

The ITV Chart Show managed to fill the void after the Roxy was cancelled.

Which was originally The Channel 4 Chart Show, which even in its move to ITV retained all the different charts for specialist music, and lasted well into the nineties. Always liked the little facts they gave about the acts, although finding details about singers on rave tunes was sparse, often on the lines of the singer is called Sharon and she likes clubbing.

TBH Kevin Sharkey is very well known in Ireland, as an artist and as an activist, and somewhat of an eccentric (though he had a tough upbringing – after being fostered by a Donegal family in his childhood, he spent his teens in one of the notorious church-run orphanage/borstal industrial schools).

He also briefly ran for president.

While Kevin Sharkey’s cameo in Father Ted is very funny, his politics are almost as messed up as Eric Clapton’s.

He is a weird guy. Like almost all Presidential candidates during that campaign (Dana, formerly blind Dragon’s Den candidate Sean Gallagher, conspiracy nut Gemma O’Doherty). And the winner, Miggledy was the most normal ,I.e. a diminutive leftist ex performance poet and former Channel 4 broadcaster who looks like Dungeonmaster.
