DOUBLE-SURNAMED SHAW TAYLOR takes personal responsibility for eliminating crime from these shores by way of five-minute despatches from pretend office. Were YOU in Shaw’s featured neighbourhood this week? Have YOU seen this man leaving your local Wilkinson’s? Did YOU spot something suspicious happening by the Belisha Beacon next to Fine Fare on Arkwright Road just before half-day closing last Wednesday lunchtime?

As a boy this show felt vaguely like being involved in big-time police work. If you knew anything about what Shaw was asking. (So it felt like an invite to be involved.)

Also produced a version for TVS.

Interesting that they produced a TVS version, because if the villains had knocked of anything good, like a jewellers or a load of safety deposits, they always “dumped the stolen 1978, blue Ford Transit, in Purley/Croyden and we’re last seen heading in the direction of the Kent/Essex/Hampshire Coast.” So unless you were being ID’d as a suspect in France or the Low Countries, which you weren’t because it was only shown on Southern and LWT, you were pretty much home free.

I can remember Shaw Taylor presenting another show called Drive In, which was close in its format to the early serious Top Gear.

Did every ITV region have its own police appeal programme, a la the God slot? On STV we had Crimedesk with the deadpan Bill Knox.

I can’t remember Granada having a show like it.

Central had Police Five, but it was never shown in the North and Scotland.
