AMERICAN EXPORTED choice of viewing to the Nine O’clock News. Long-running series revolved around “character” called, ho ho, Kelly Monteith, whose “life” formed the basis of endless relationship observation schticks and LARRY SANDERS-esque dressing room inserts. “Wife” was GABRIELLE DRAKE.

Last seen in a shit-awful ‘comedy’ called SCREWBALL HOTEL, circa 1994.

He had that kind of glib/smug face and Hollywood teeth, that made me want to throw my (wired) remote control at the (22″) TV screen back in the day.

I watched the episode from 1982 on YouTube, and this man was the epitome of the word “affable”. It was quite funny in places, mostly thanks to his delivery, and I noticed Spike Milligan’s old cohort Neil Shand on co-writing duties, which explains the light surrealism.
I thought he was hilarious when I was little, but was rarely allowed to stay up and watch because Kelly swore sometimes. “Somewhere I can relax my face!”

News has reached me that Mr Monteith has passed away, aged eighty. Whichever way you cut it, six series on BBC2 was a pretty good run. To quote TV columnists at the time, he was ‘affable,’ ‘quirky,’ and ‘took a sideways look at life.’
