TV: H is for...

Hello, Mum!

A BIZARRE ONE and no foolin’. Absolutely live late-night BBC2 effort wherein CLIVE “CASUALTY” MANTLE, NICK “FAST FORWARD” WILTON, HELEN “TOKEN WOMAN IN EVERY MID-80s COMIC TROUPE” LEDERER and ARNOLD “AND WHY NOT?” BROWN essayed topical gags, “sideways look at” sketches and “zany” antics to ever decreasing circle of viewers. Standard fare: SOUTH BANK SHOW pastiche profiling the life and times of…Sooty.

You forgot to mention the musical troupe, The Bermuda Triangles, who I think set up their instruments in the bathroom. And i loved the poster of the Thames ident (minus the word “THAMES”) in the living room
I wouldn’t like to see it again, as it would spoil my memories of it being funny.

Two things stick in the mind – an advert for ‘Vicious Bastard’ dogfood, and Ian McGaskill singing ‘Stormy Weather’!

I actually found an episode on YouTube. Ouch. Not even a dozen writers could make it work, there was no chemistry between the cast members and Steve Bell’s animated skit near the end was just painful. The Bermuda Triangle parts were the best, but even they weren’t as good as Smith and Jones’s sketches with the club musicians.

Sir, I had the role of Bernie Bermuda, leader of Bermuda Triangle. The show was broadcast live with no delay between Moonlighting and Newsnight on BBC2 for 6 weeks from January 1987. It was a TV version of the live Radio 4 comedy series In One Ear, same cast and producer Jamie Rix. Clive Mantle, Helen Lederer and Nick Wilton. Roland Rivron and Simon Brint did not appear as they were in French and Saunders as Raw Sex the same night but recorded. Other writers included Paul Merton (as Paul Martin) who wrote the Sooty sketch. Debbie McGee appeared as herself.
