It’s a shame this wasn’t given another chance – maybe in a later time slot? The two episides that were actually screened were pant wettingly funny to this 15 year old schoolgirl (as I was back then).

Someone called Mark Pickett has since made the entire series freely available on YouTube. Sadly, it’s not an unjustly condemned piece. Considering its controversial reputation, there was nothing going on that Grange Hill, the Bash Street Kids, Ripping Yarns and the St Trinian’s films hadn’t already done. ITV clearly primed the series as a big hitter, hence the presence of several very decent British character comedy actors (Roger Sloman, Nick Wilton, Tony Haygarth and Roy Kinnear among them) and heavy publicity in the TV Times, but it seems nobody had taken into account the fact that the scripts were frequently dire, or that the show had a desolate atmosphere – partly resulting from it being shot on location in a proper school minus a studio audience. Conspiracy theories working overtime here, I’d guess someone high up at ITV saw the programmes, thought ‘Oh Christ, what have we done? This is dreadful’ and decided to run it into the ground as quickly as possible by scheduling it in the 8pm weekday slot where it got kicked stinking for its troubles. Had Hardwicke House gone out in the Spitting Image / Hale and Pace Sunday 10pm slot, it wouldn’t have raised a single eyebrow – in fact, it would have looked very tame indeed.

I can just about remember the fuss about it, but was too young to see it.

Supposedly it was shown in full in Sweden, unless I’m thinking of a different series.

Good to see it’s in full on You Tube, as with Network closing it’s probably not going to get a full release, unless Talking Pictures start showing it.
