Aeronauts, The

25-MINUTE GUNG-HO adventures of Ernest Laverdure and Michel Tanguy, young strapping pilots in the French air force. Black and white derring-do which came on before HECTOR’S HOUSE and badly dubbed into English.

Wasn’t “faster than fast” Gigantor, The Space Age Robot? I can’t remember all of the lyrics to The Aeronauts theme, but snippets do come back: “better than best, boys, we pass every test, you’re ahead of the rest when those crime-fightin’ Aeronauts are cuttin’ those bounds, in a fury of sound, you’re a loser all round ‘gainst the crook-catchin’ Aeronauts – so play in the wind, boys, you better give in – ’cause your troubles begin when those TWO DARING AERONAUTS FLYYYY!!!!!” *mad Hammond play-out ending with a sharp honk on brass* – okay, not so much snippets as a fair-sized chunk. Loved that tune. Remember very little about the stories.

I’ve got a 2-disc set of French TV themes with the original version’s theme song (“Les Chevaliers du Ciel”) and a whole load of others. “The Flashing Blade” and “Robinson Crusoe” aren’t there, but that doesn’t matter when you get the answer to the question “What would French-made adaptations of “Tom Sawyer” and “Quentin Durward” use as theme songs?” (Respectively: an overdose of harmonicas and banjos, and a really out-of-place ’60s Bardot-esque ballad.)

Based on a comic in Pilote, home of Asterix, and again by Uderzo, the series actually had some pretty distinguished guest stars. Valery Inkijinoff, the villainous Mr. X was basically France’s Burt Kwouk, a Buryat who played all kinds of Asian types. And guests included Victor Lanoux of Cousin Cousine and the thief in European Vacation, and Hollywood veteran Jean Pierre Aumont and former leading man turned New German cinema stalwart Ivan Desny.
