Piccadilly Radio

So much to answer for...MANCHESTER-based ad-supported service renowned as the first stop on Chris Evans’ rampage through radio; inevitable sacking rumoured to have followed on-air announcement that he “liked cats, lightly grilled on both sides”. Colleagues on various sides of the chronological spectrum included Mark Radcliffe, Timmy Mallett (who claims to have once locked himself out of the studio live on air), Terry Christian, Frank Sidebottom and endlessly-‘launched’ latecomer to the Funny Phone Call party Steve Penk.

Like a few ILR’s Piccadilly Radio split it’s FM & AM frequencies in the late 1980s, with the more Pop output becoming Key 103, & the oldies & light stuff making up Piccadilly Gold (Now Magic 1254).

In the late 1990s I worked in an office that had the radio tuned into Key 103, DJ’s I remember include Spence McDonald, Mark Benson, JK & Joel, & Pete Mitchell & Jeff Lloyd.

The play list seemed an odd mix from about 1980 onwards, with a slight bias on current hits & groups with a Manchester connection.

I remember impressing some people by getting the Top 10 At 10 really quick.

I remember The Bradshaws were a fun alternative to the music, One of my friends really liked it but didn’t like the TV version when it came along.

Radio Timperley was another highlight, with Frank Sidebottom presenting it & singing versions of songs with the lyrics rewritten to amusing effect.
