Radio 5: The Programmes

Morning Edition

Believe it or not, Broadcasting Standing Up was considered his 'gimmick' back thenLEGENDARY where-it-all-started morning miscellaney presided over by Danny Baker, considering playing records very much secondary to heavily retro-slanted need to ruminate over the possible uses of the Ronco Bottle Chopper and the current whereabouts of Phil Daniels. Holiday cover by such luminaries as Nick Hancock and Chris Morris only serves to highlight general ‘if you weren’t there, you missed out’ nature of proceedings. Didn’t really catch on when shunted over to Radio 1, but then that’s why we had the original Radio 5.

    And Featuring: Allis Moss, too.

The first morning of the show had Baker asking callers to ring in about Programmes That May Or May Not Have Existed, thus inventing TV Cream. I also remember from those early weeks, the Bake ruminating on “that long pole that teachers used to open high windows” and wondering who made and sold them. Marvellous, wonderful stuff.

The ultimate Programme That Only You Remember for the whole span of that slot was The Singing Ringing Tree, in fact. And obviously there’s a fuller list of sidekicks to be had: Allis, as stated, Hancock, Danny Kelly, Mark Kermode, Janet Ellis and her diaries, Tommy Boyd, Laurie Sore (who worked as a travel agent, fact fans), Bob ‘Britain’s premier tapeworm’ Mills, Andy Darling, Paul Roseby, the never quite explained Dr H…

Cheers for the sidekick-flagging; they’re actually being saved for a possible future longer-form examination of The Bake’s Radio Days… ask your newsagent to reserve a copy now! Erm, however that works exactly.

Paul Roseby – he was great, he regularly used to do (for no readily explained reason) a great Pathe News pastiche on the show, backed by the Ray Conniff version of On The Street Where You Live.

What about Cornelius Lysaght, didn’t he expand his role on the programme from racing reporter?

I don’t think his role ever really expanded beyond giving Dan’s old man racing tips, to be honest.

It’d be interesting to find out now who did the sport throughout that period – presumably a load of people who are big names now must have appeared/put up with Dan between 1992 and 1993. Certainly it was Clare Balding’s first gig.

My favourite moment on Morning Edition was a phone in about things you felt guilty about (or some such) & the guy who phoned in to explain he and his brother were playing with his Scalectrix set. He had his brother test it by putting his tongue on it. “that shouldn’t have happened” he said and fiddled with some buttons and asked his brother to test it again.

Thankfully, the man who had the funniest ever radio call (the Dundee Utd bow tie) on the original 6-0-6 is back where he belongs on Saturday morning. Hooray.

Pedantry corner: Gordon and his bow tie was on Baker & Kelly United, a Saturday morning miscellany show that ran during the 1996-97 season until Baker’s sacking.

I remember my form tutor raving about the time Danny started talking about a toilet at Broadcasting House with a really strong flush, & how most of the staff on the show tried flushing bigger & bigger things down,

My form tutor thought it was one of the funniest thing he had ever heard.

I still have a tape somewhere with some Bakerised songs (“Has anybody seen Sam Lowry?”)

‘Nagasaki’ from Jeeves and Wooster, Race Horsing at 6.55 and drilling through from Radio 3. 🙂
