Lenin Of The Rovers

Why no 'Brezhnev's Boots'?EIGHTIES-as-they-came sitcom featuring Alexei Sayle riffing on that Albanian National Football Team single he did circa OTT as Ricky Lenin, star player of Felchester Rovers, Britain’s only all-communist football team, also staffed by Phil Cornwell and, in one of his last roles, Ballard Berkeley. Parodies of The Sun abounded, as did, more obliquely, characters who spoke entirely in pop lyrics.

Oh god, weren’t there players called Frank Lee Brian and Brian Frank Lee?

Frank Lee Brian was the host of Footy Scene, the programme’s equivalent to Football Focus, and was played by Ken Woolstenholme. I think Brian Frank Lee was one of the programme’s co-hosts, another being the Geordie ‘Wor’ Jackie Frankly.

The series was temporarily postponed due to the Hillsborough disaster occurring during its initial run.

The great lost radio series. Numerous problems hampered the show including the death of one it’s stars and the aforementioned Hillsborough delay.

“There are plenty of cups to win, but none have the tradition and the sheer prestige of the Heinz Sandwich Spread FA Cup!”

    And that was in 1988…

Alexei claimed the average audience struggled to get into double figures, due to the off-peak timeslot & niche appeal.

Other team members were Stevie Stalin & Terry Trotski.

It was issued on tape in the 1990s, when I first became aware of it.

Has it been on Radio 7?

Always remember the line “Ah feel like ah’ve been shagged by a rhino!” Anyway, yeah, it has been on Radio 7/4 Extra, I listened to an episode and it wasn’t quite as funny as I remembered, but fair enough for what it was. Marcus Berkmann used to write for 80s mag Your Sinclair.
