MUCH-loved unhinged pastiche of ye olde ‘Boys Own’-style publications and attendant tales of “derring-do and derring-don’t” and features on improving outdoor hobbies, illustrated with six colour plates and numerous line drawings, all of it laced with authentic period xenophobia, and produced on stretched goat’s vellum. Peter Baynham was the enthusiastic young chap flicking through the pages, with Alistair McGowan as ‘your old chum The Editor’ and his promises of the never actually present adventures of ‘Captain Bonnett’. Went distinctly and enjoyably off-message as inspiration ran dry in later episodes, including a fifties edition with free Hula Hoop, and an ill-advised reader-baffling merger with trade publication Lathe Monthly. Pip pip!
