Radio 2: The Hosts

MOORE, Ray

And to think Jack Your Body was only weeks away...EARLY SHOW ultra-dry behemoth of fond remembrance, who died of cancer in the late eighties. Listeners will recall references to Gatport Airwick, abominable loads and the ‘bog-eyed jog’, as well as regular fill-in stints for El Tel on breakfast, whence Wogan’s Winner got renamed Moore’s Horse. See also surprise 1986 chart challenger O’ My Father Had A Rabbit, which briefly did battle with Pet Shop Boys, Swing Out Sister, The Communards and The Housemartins. No, really.

Sadly taken from us when he was 47 and when Ray had so much more to offer. I reckon had Ray lived and Wogan decided not to return to Radio 2, he’d have been the logical choice for the Radio 2 breakfast show as he was like Wogan with his in jokes, sayings and wit. Always fondly remember My Father Had A Rabbit.

Radio 2 ad trouble filling the breakfast slot while Terry Wogan was concentrating on TV work, trying out Ken Bruce, Derek Jameson & Brian Hayes with differing degrees of success.

It’s interesting that the didn’t offer Ray Moore the full time job at one point.

I still think Ray Moore would have been the ideal choice in 1985 and had a large following, while Ken Bruce was relatively unknown then, but possibly Ray didn’t want the pressure of the job and sadly his health began to fail in the late eighties. Again a fantastic, unique presenter that only Radio 2 seemed to create in the seventies that seems quite rare now. ( Only Ken Bruce seems to keep up this tradition).

And the sad end to my story, I’ll tell before I go,
Was it rabbit, duck or fish we had? We’ll never ever know!
