He also hosted many of the Beatles radio shows which were broadcast on the BBC pre Radio 1 days.

Sad news today, avids, when I found out Brian Matthew died. He was a pioneer on British radio, hosting the first BBC radio show devoted to pop music( outside of the chart rundown), and Sounds of the Sixties on Radio 2 was a delight. Brian had a genuine enthusiasm for what he played and an in depth knowledge of the music. He joins John Peel, Tommy Vance and Alan Freeman in the radio afterlife of presenters who cared about and loved what they played and weren’t interested in being bigger than the music.
Now in 1962 this was a minor hit in Boston.

Sounds of the Sixties with Tony Blackburn is Ok, but it’s become too mainstream and seems biased towards soul music. There’s none of the eccentricity and love of the obscure that marked the Brian Matthew era, which made the show compulsive listening, and it’s a shame really.
