Radio 2: The Hosts

HUNNIFORD, Gloria

"They make films that are for your eyes, fro-om Hollywood!"EMERGENCY STANDBY meeting of ‘blarney’ quota during Old Tel’s wanderings in televisual Peter Egan-interviewing, courtesy of scarily bouffanted hostess of TV’s We Love TV. Much was made of her status as the first long-term solo female presenter on Radio 2, though coverage of feminist issues was noticeably thin on the ground.

“I’d like to complain that Gloria Hunniford keeps clearing her throat and never apologises for doing so!”

Well, Matthew, you have never heard her sing. She did a particularly painful ditty about world peace for Comic Relief in 1989 that made Wogan’s singing sound good.

Still going strong now on Loose Women and Rip Off Britain and has aged really well. I do recall GH being referred to Grievous Bodily Hunniford by Wogan for references to suspender belts improving your love life on her show, which raised a few complaints from older Radio 2 listeners waiting for their Mantovani fix. Also went down the Wogan route of chat show presenting, but not quite as memorable.
