Radio 1: The Shows

Victor Lewis-Smith

CRANK phonecall-wielding late night humour from the one-time hi-tech one-man lunatic fringe of comedy, taking the tape-wind festooned piss out of the big targets of the day (Kenneth Branagh and Acid House, mainly) and Esther Rantzen from the perspective of his peculiar high-speed early sixties-fixated monochrome comic universe, with music from harmonising bible-bashers Take 6 and foul-mouthed prog-rock escapees Stewart & Gaskin. Fondly remembered by a small army of last-minute revision-fretters who never quite understood the fuss about that Morris chap.

The editing on these shows was quite brilliant, maybe the best thing about it because though it was very funny in places, you couldn’t recommend it to anyone by describing what happened in it because you sounded like an insane offensive person. That self-deprecation of the programme was difficult to convey without actually listening to it.
