What We Just Watched For Christmas 2019 – Part Three

The third and final part of our tinselly TV-athon finds Chris selecting a vintage festive show for Ian and Graham to watch.

Today’s instalment includes: “It has been said, maybe I said it myself, or somebody… I’ve possibly read it somewhere.”

Merry Christmas one and all!

Is it weird that I mostly know Reginald Bosanquet from his disco record? It seems to have been his true gift to the nation.

Anyway, God rest ye merry gentlemen, hope this podcast returns next year…

For a time the most I new about Reginald Bosanquet was that song on Not The Nine O’Clock News about him.

Thanks for that. We’re hoping to make even more eps in 2020. Merry Christmas!

First. Many thanks for these podcasts. This set of three got me through a semi-grizzly train journey yesterday from London back to Birmingham. Looking forward to more in the new year.

However, stuck for a loose end last evening, I set about finding this episode via the usual video streaming site, and without directly linking here – found it in of all places, as a repeat around 10.10 – 10.50pm on Election Night 1979.

Can I make a point, about Chris’s theory that that the Gen Game Abba skit was recorded on the actual Generation Game set?

I don’t think it was. If you re-watch, at no point in the ‘over the shoulder’ shot of the Gen Game audience in the TV Theatre, do you actually see Mike address the audience, a la Larry. I’d contend this was a recorded shot of a random Generation Game Audience recorded for Yarwood’s team to drop in.
The actual sketch was recorded in front of the audience – Benny from Abba rides the laughs and plays to the crowd – but i don’t think it was down Sheps Bush Green way. Plus, the sound of the crowd was different and more echoey in the TV Theatre.

I will not argue about the credit given to the great work by the production designer throught the show however. He really nailed the ultra cheapness of an LWT Studio 1 set circa 1978 in the Big Night skit brilliantly.

Happy Christmas to all at TV Cream Towers.
