Creamguide(Films) Commentaries: Doctor Who – The TV Movie

creamguidefilmsdrwho

CREAMGUIDE(FILMS) COMMENTARIES is back! Back! BACK! And it’s about fucking time too. Join Chris, Craig and Jack in an adventure in Rosemary and Thyme (or Bramwell) as they pick over the DOCTOR WHO TV MOVIE from 1996 – on the very anniversary of its UK transmission – in fine style stopping off to hear from commentary regulars Father Lionel Fanthorpe, Michael Caine and Bob Mills (or Keith Richards) with special guest references to Patsy Byrne and Len Kabasinski: together at last! It’s the DVD version that kicks in straight off the bat. So press play from the off and enjoy some barely relevant chat that is at least half human.
If you don’t want to listen to it using our player (above), then download it (83.5 MB). Or, to save you all this hassle, just subscribe to our podcast via iTunes. And this is our RSS feed.

Excellent stuff as usual lads – is it wrong that I picture you all as recording your podcasts in an after hours Glasgow security guards’ booth?

Anyway… Christopher Lloyd was being lined up to play the Master, eyeing a Jack Nicholson Joker style extended royalties deal. (His financial advisor in the matter being one Mr J Nicholson – his old ‘One Flew Over’ and ‘Goin South’ pa) This was when Amblin was involved (and the script contained lines like “why not travel the timeways in a sports coupe?” (Mark Gatiss scried a copy C2008) Universal however, taking over fully, nixed Lloyd and focused on nabbing “a Tom Baker lookalike”. Mcgann resembled a sleeker Baker-alike which was his foot in the door of hiring.

Loathe him or despose him, Alan Yentob, who built Spring Bank Holiday programming into a prestigious slot to rival Christmas (hence his poaching of Wallace and Gromit) – and when from 1992’s ‘Naked Gun’ ‘n’ Freddy Mercury tribute until about, well, this was first broadcast in 1996 went untramelled – took a bit more Beeb interest than was contractually inherent (thanks to the benevolent Segal’s genuflection to DW’s mother channel)

And as the estimable Mr Diamond posits, this at the end of the day is the Piltdown Man twixt the original series and the RTD initiated reboot.
