CONNERY, Sean

conneryAch, it’s a pain writing billings for the more well-known stars, as you’ll know everything already. (‘A milkman, you say? Well, never in all my born days!’) He’s all a-grump these days in his tax haven, but at his peak he was untouchable, and no-one has yet worked out quite why. Terry Gilliam knew that just having Sean Connery in his film for a day of shooting was worth the price of admission. How the old sod does it we’ll never know.

FINEST HOUR:
Getting all bleedin’ high and bloody mighty as The Man Who Would be King.

Five years before he played you know who, one of his first acting roles was in Hell Drivers, playing a lorry driver with the nickname of Jock. Quite an underrated film and rarely seen now, this featured quite a few top actors of the day with Stanley Baker playing an ex prisoner going straight as a lorry driver, Patrick Mc Goohan as a bullying and violent foreman, and William Hartnell as a dishonest general manager. Worth watching for the stunts with the lorries that are thrashed and trashed so the drivers can reach their targets( often dishonestly).

Sad news today as the legend that is Sir Sean Connery has died. He was my first introduction to James Bond and still regarded as the best 007 ever, but there was vastly more to him than this role. After the camp glamour and silliness of Diamonds Are Forever, how about his next role, The Offence, a low budget film set in a grim new town where Sean played a brutal detective who is demoralised by his work and beats a suspect to death. Not a major success, but more proof Sean could switch roles easily.

Sad news of Sir Sean’s passing not just great as James Bond, but also Captain Remus, Jimmy Malone & Dr Jones Sr.

Hell Drivers has been on one of the oldies channels quite recently, some of them seem to have the same films come round every few months.
