Thirty-Nine Steps, The (Big Ben edition!)

The 1978 effort starring Robert Powell as Richard Hannay getting framed for murder, uncovering a plot to kick-start World War I then clambering all over the face of Big Ben, no doubt inspired by the Will Hay film My Learned Friend, it says here. Anyway, terrific stuff from the Rank Org. also starring John Mills, David ‘Concentrated Evil’ Warner, Eric ‘Moriarty’ Porter, Timothy ‘V’ West, Michael ‘Ned’ Bilton and John ‘MacPhail’ Grieve.

This version has a subplot in a sanatorium where Hannay get’s sedated & rolls down miles of corridors in a wheelchair.

The term 39 Steps is changed again in this version.

One of the best uses of clips Not the Nine O’clock News ever did was playing the News at Ten theme over images of Robert Powell hanging off the Big Ben clock tower.
