There’s a Girl In My Soup

Peter Sellers is Robert Danvers, a vain, rotten telly personality not too unlike Wee Sonny MacGregor from The Naked Truth. Unfortunately, unlike The Naked Truth this is pretty poor. Goldie Hawn giggles along and they go on holiday and she remakes him and he becomes a nice person and um-tiddly ido tra-la-la. However, Tony ‘cravat in Sainsbury’s’ Britton, Diana ‘it come from Cecil Gee’s’ Dors and – hooray! – Marianne Stone are all on hand to lift the gloom.

A very dull 70’s sex comedy that disappoints considering all the talent involved. I only occasionally rewatch it for a brief bit of nudity involving Gabrielle Drake.

It’s The Au Pair Girls you want for Gabrielle starkers. It’s not much funnier than this film, mind you.

We also see quite a lot of Goldie Hawn. Sellers is trying so hard in this to be the suave ladykiller he thought he was that he forgets to be funny – one of several films from a period in which he either made films which no one was ever going to see (The Blockhouse, A Day at the Beach, The Optimists of Nine Elms, Ghost in the Noonday Sun, although he sabotaged the last one himself), or ones in which comes across as a massive creep (this, Hoffman, Where Does It Hurt, I Love You, Alice B. Toklas etc.) Normal service only resumed with The Return of the Pink Panther.

I actually like I Love You Alice B. Toklas, either because it’s so dated it manages to amuse, or because Sellers is so clueless in the film (and in life, I suppose) that I feel really sorry for him.

THX 1139 – I’m aware of the Au Pair Girls. I was telling a friend how much I adore the brilliant folk singer Nick Drake, then learning how beautiful sexy Gabrielle from UFO was his sister. ( she played Kelly Monteith’s wife in his BBC show too.)

As a kid, I adored Peter Sellers. It was always a bit heartbreaking when there’d be a Sellers movie on TV and it would be one of the rubbish ones rather than a funny one. After The Fox and Soft Beds , Hard Battles were particularly disappointing. 😕

That’s right, Nick and Gabrielle were siblings, there was a TV documentary about him on about ten, fifteen years ago where she spoke very sweetly about him.

I’ll agree Soft Beds Hard Battles is terrible (that’s the “Sellers as Hitler” one, I think – sheesh), but I love After the Fox, I know it spelled the end of his first big run of commerciality, but there’s some fantastic stuff in there (the ice cream!). And the score by Burt Bacharach is brilliant. Victor Mature surprisingly excellent too. A real cult movie.

Seconded – After the Fox is one of his funniest films – bit of an overlooked gem these days. As is The Party. Can they still show that?

I maybe should rewatch After The Fox. ( I was probably disappointed seeing it as a kid that Sellers wasn’t doing Clouseau.) I’m a big fan of The Magic Christian, but realise this cult movie isn’t for everyone either.
