Sweeney!

The first big screen outing for Thaw and Waterman, and the exclamation mark should provide adequate warning. (Also note the rationing of definite articles that was eventually to do for the Callaghan administration.) This plays more like an extended episode of The Professionals than proper ‘Todd, with over-the-top shootings, bombings and oil baron intrigues galore. Barry ‘Van Der Valk’ Foster , Colin ‘laxative’ Welland, Diane ‘Cuckoo’ Keen, Brian ‘mysteries’ Glover and Lynda ‘Preston’ Bellingham join in the sillies.

Lynda Bellingham spends about a minute of screen time acting at the start, before her character is drugged and all her clothes get ripped off. The 1970s, there.

Anyway, never mind that, what about the ending? (Spoilers, obvs) When Carter yells at Regan, “They didn’t kill him – YOU DID!!!”, what is he on about? Regan didn’t pull the trigger, he’s spent the whole film trying (and failing) to prevent people getting killed, but the baddies were just too determined. So rein yourself in, George.

Could have inspired LWT to make The Professionals with all the shadowy forces at work and the stronger violence than in the television series of The Sweeney. Rather different to Carter and Regan chasing some dodgy geezers around London who have stolen the day’s takings from a branch of Ladbrokes.
