TV Cream

Films: R is for...

Ruthless People

If we were the sort of TV guide that cared about the actual content of  ’80s Hollywood films, we’d mention that this screwball caper wherein Bette Midler is kidnapped by Helen ‘Supergirl’ Slater, to the non-existent chagrin of Danny DeVito, is a surprisingly enjoyable effort, exactly the sort of thing the Zucker-Abrahams-“Airplane!”-Zucker team should have done more of instead of the likes of Spy Hard, and stars William G. ‘Dr Samuels off Head Of the Class’ Schilling to boot. But as you know, we’re only interested in the inevitable motley assortment of names on the soundtrack, so all hail Mick “Freejack? That sounds like a larf” Jagger, Billy “see, each stanza corresponds to a particular year” Joel, Dan ‘Instant Replay’ Hartman, Luther “the Marianne Stone of ’80s soundtracks” Vandross, Paul “yep, it’s the one about his bloody hat again” Young and German Eurovision champ Nicole.
