Rocky Horror Picture Show, The

“Mumsie! Another royalty cheque’s arrived!” Richard O’Brien continues to live off his one successful theatrical venture, despite everyone in the world both living, dead and yet-to-be-born having seen this already at least five times each. Featuring the varyingly-clad forms of Tim Curry, Little Nell, Meatloaf, Koo Stark, and our favourites Charles “Willard White speakin'” Gray and Christopher Biggins.

I attended a showing at a theatre in Whitley Bay 10 years ago, not by choice, but because my partner was a big fan. I do recall a group of people all dressed up as characters from Rocky Horror descending on some Sky Sports Shown Here style pub and the atmosphere was rather tense as somehow men in Newcastle shirts and men dressed like Frank N Furter don’t mix well.
Also with regard to the film, the narrator is shouted down every time he appears for some reason. Rather a shame as I like Charles Gray.

Who doesn’t like Charles Gray? He was something of a legend in theatrical circles and a great imbiber (I believe he once fell sleep on stage), but wasn’t massively well-used by films although the best thing in Diamonds Are Forever by a country mile. ‘Such pretty cheeks too!’

I remember being seriously disappointed when I first saw this movie on Channel 4 sometime in the late 80’s. This was after years of hearing about it and the cult around it and seeing the occasional gang of students in the city centre dressed up as characters on their way to a midnight screening. Seeing Charles Gray do The Time Warp is a hoot and Tim Curry is brilliant, but neither the music or the movie has aged well. The Phantom Of The Paradise from the same era is infinitely better as a film and for the Paul Williams soundtrack.

The best things about the film are the banquet, where the guests eat Meatloaf for dinner, the RKO Radio Show dance routine and the Time Warp, otherwise I didn’t get it, but probably funnier in real life was the lads pub being invaded by Rocky Horror wannabes. Doubt Kev and Lee were best pleased that some very important Premiership game was being interrupted by Brad and Janet and Frank N Furter.

In spite of it’s cult status I’ve somehow never seen this, I keep meaning to watch it on TV then miss it!

The follow-up Shock Treatment supposedly isn’t as good, with no Tim Curry & Rik Mayall.
