Films: P is for...

Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol

This ‘film’ raises a few pertinent questions: how did Bobcat Goldthwaite manage to forge a career out of talking in a funny voice? How has Sharon Stone managed to erase this from memory but not King Solomon’s Mines? Since Commandant Lassard was the only remotely funny character why didn’t they feature him more? At what point did someone say, “We’ll get it right next time!” And finally just, well, why?

Every night Sharon Stone still has terrible nightmares about this film and how it could come back to haunt her. Mind you, I suppose it was innocent fun compared with another film where she liked ice picks and crossing her legs.

Sharon Stone has been in far far FAR worse fare, I give you the incredibly overrated “Basic Instinct” and “Catwoman”.

@ Victor Field, I think her best role was as Arnold Schwarzenegger’s treacherous wife in Total Recall, the first role most people remember Sharon Stone for. Basic Instinct was OK for the time, but is just dated now.

Sharon Stone is brilliant in Basic Instinct, it would be an ordeal without her but she completely understood how to play the material and was wonderful in it. Not the sort of performance (or film) that gets widely praised, though.

I’ll tell you her worst film: Basic Instinct 2. Makes the original worse in retrospect.

Underrated Shaz film: Action Jackson. Though she doesn’t make it to the end, I think. Great in Casino, but apparently she’s tired of people telling her that in an “I didn’t know you could act!” kind of way (understandable).

World’s Greatest Dad is an excellent cringe comedy. Probably Robin Williams’ last really good performance, too.

She was also in a forgettable remake of Gloria, so much that the Gina Rowlands original is more likely to be shown on TV.

Coincidence: it’s Gena Rowlands birthday today, she’s 91!
