Legal Eagles

Tap-dancing lawyer Robert Redford (doing his lovable simp thing) has his career stalled by partner Debra Winger (doing her emotional jaw-wobbling-from-side-to-side thing) and her pyromaniac client Daryl Hannah (doing her spaced-out-peering-from-underneath-fringe thing). Ivan “Ghostbusters” Reitman throws explosions and pratfalls into the usual courtroom double-cross affair, making up a mess of, well, mess. An early Christine “Dick!” Baranski appearance, Hannah singing a song of her own composition and a malevolently camp art click-ting Terence Stamp are minor points of interest here.

The only real point of interest in this film is that supposedly everybody connected with making it was a client of the same talent agency, and the movie was essentially a package assembled by their agents. Debra Winger dumped her agent shortly afterwards. She should have done it when he offered her this pile of manure . . .

Said pile of manure cost somewhere in region of 38 million dollars – hard to believe something so achingly mundane could cost so much money. Unless that warehouse which gets blown up half-way through contained most of the budget in cash.

Rather bizarrely, the movie’s end credits include a crew supplying “Special Visual Effects by Industrial Light and Magic”! I can only assume it was for the pyrotechnics.

There is another point of interest for “Legal Eagles” – when Universal sold it to TV Ivan Reitman put back in his original ending for the film (in which – SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! – Daryl Hannah is found guilty of stealing the paintings, instead of it being all Brian Dennehy’s fault). Hannah’s “song” is on the soundtrack album; thankfully Rod Stewart’s isn’t.
