Ghostbusters

Good but over-celebrated Ramis/Murray/Ackroyd/Moranis/Weaver/Hudson/Potts effects ‘n’ sarcasm sideshow. Watch for Casey Kasem while the Thompson Twins collect their royalties.

Being only 8 years old in 1984 I wasnt aware that Bill Murray and Dan Ackroyd were comedy stars and it was supposed to be a comedy film, so me and my class mates thought they were playing action heroes.

What it ingeniously caught was the “hang it all” humour that made the chemistry between Han, Luke and Leia work so well in the first ‘Star Wars’ movie before Lucas decided he was making Greek drama, went all serius and jettisoned the (William Huyk and Gloria Katz word doctored bonhomie. This, along with Aykroyd’s original intention that the movie be about Ghostbusters who were as workaday and working class as garbage men or firefighters = you get a sense of this from his Ray Stantz = adds to a kooky sense of realism among the doughy ghost antics and sold it to a lot of kids. In fact it is Ramis, rather than Aykroyd and Murray, who receives the most fanmail from scientists in all fields saying his turn in the movie steered their career choice.
