Donald ‘Perfectly’ Pleasance and Raquel ‘Legend of Walks Far Woman’ Welch are at cross purposes amongst the stringy antibodies in this inexplicably famous “don’t drop the scalpel” miniature psychedelic surgery trip. But never mind all that, we want to see the Filmation cartoon spinoff series again, complete with eyepatch-wearing ship’s captain and turban-wearing “master of mysterious powers” The Guru. “Time limit – twelve hours!”

Recently shown on Channel 4 and could only be made in the sixties, with its wacky plot(scientist is nearly killed by the Soviets for defecting to the Americans with his plan to miniaturise people and weapons to use in espionage), five scientists and a midget submarine are miniaturised to the size of a fly to repair the scientist’s brain, and most of the action takes place inside the scientist’s body. Best part is where a treacherous Donald Pleasence is killed by a white blood cell and the submarine is destroyed, and the survivors have a couple of minutes left to save the scientist’s brain and escape through his right eye before they revert to their normal size.
I always wonder what would have happened if the miniaturisation wore off too early, as it could only last an hour. Possibly it would have been like The Alien gone mad, or Scanners, as the scientist would have erupted and there’d have been more gore than a slasher movie. However, in the best tradition of sixties sci fi, the good guys always won.

I’ve not seen this for years but at one time it seemed to be on TV quite often.
The sets worked very well, & I think won an Oscar.
Raquel Welch was going to be a Bond girl (Domino in Thunderball IIRC) but had her contract bought out to appear in this.
Spitting Image did a very funny spoof in one of their books, with a crew featuring Jeffrey Archer being shrunk & sent into Margaret Thatcher’s body.
