Confessions of a Pop Performer

It’s everybody’s favourite Confessions film, this one. That is, among those who have favourite Confessions films. Jill Gascoigne! Rula Lenska! Star Knockers! Peter Jones doing pretty much the same msarmy sub-Hughie Green role as he did in Smashing Time, and loads of other stuff! ‘Diddy’ David Hamilton “as himself!” An angry Bill Pertwee with a javelin! Askwith bonking away to the sound of Spike Milligan’s musical version of On The Ning Nang Nong! And of course, Askwith’s glam outfit extraordinaire, the “mean as Jack the Ripper” Kipper, with Peter ‘Please Sir!’ Cleall as psychotic lead singer Nutter Normington! Plus Anthony Booth, Bill Maynard, Doris Hare, Bob Todd, Carol ‘Please Sir!’ Hawkins, Diane ‘Rag Trade’ Langton, Linda ‘Hi-De-Hi’ Regan, Ian Lavender, Rita ‘Benny Hill’ Webb and Dave Prowse. “I fink the ol’ joanna comes in ‘ere!”

RIP Tony Booth, he always seemed on the verge of apoplectic rage in the Confessions movies, so perfect for playing a shady 1970s pop manager.

“I’d like to handle your P.R.”

    “I.C.K? Er, no, no…”

If only Richard Curtis wrote dialogue of that quality now.

Bill Maynard’s son Maynard Williams who plays the bassist in Kipper shares a most gobsmacking resemblance to Liam Gallagher in this.
