Films: B is for...

Ben-Hur

Time took its toll on Chuck Heston and his reputation and suddenly it seemed that his stature was reduced from the level of Moses himself walking among us to decrepit gun-toting loony (and who has he got to blame for that we wonder?) but there’s still a canon of great films to watch regardless of what his ‘cold dead hands’ had latterly been up to. Of course, that said the best on show here is Hugh Griffiths who won an Oscar for his turn and spent no time at all wondering what Ben Hur would have done if he’d had a Winchester 45 to hand.

When playing Thomas More in London during the mid eighties Charlie boy refused to admit to the costumiers that he worn a syrup.
So ended up wearing another one on top during dress rehearsals, giving him not so much the look of A Man For All Seasons, more Olive from On The Buses a stage hand once observed.
