ZEMECKIS, Robert

The joker’s joker. An expert in on-set improvisation. It’s not often mentioned that Who Framed Roger Rabbit? was originally an all-live- action film, and Zemeckis only added the animation at the eleventh hour to detract from Bob Hoskins’ bizarre accent. On the merits of Forrest Gump, the jury is always ‘still out’. ‘Cheesy flag-waver for American interventionism or scathing satire of the mentally handicapped?’ ‘Either way, you can’t ignore it!’ Actually rather good at doing slapstick.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit was lucky to be made in a sweet spot when traditional could be combined with live action footage smoothly, but CGI wasn’t good enough to animate in the scale required.

In 1983 it would have been optically combined & left with matte lines, & in 1993 the CGI then available would have still looked awkward.

Also many of the staffer from the golden age of animation who worked on it wouldn’t have been available a few years later.
