RUSSELL, Ken

The visual symphonist. Scourge of the establishment. His louche biopics of classical composers may have failed to impress the general public, critics and music lovers alike, but you have to admire the way he keeps making them. Only Melvyn Bragg truly understands him. Shunned by the Philistine majority, he now auteurs his films with a digital camera in his own back garden. ‘A veritable one-man film industry!’ Hary Hill writes: ‘More camcorder classics coming up after the break!’

Nobody else could have directed Tommy. Shame he had to blot that particular copybook by trying to do it all over again with the music of…Franz Liszt. Quite why Roger Daltrey didn’t simply walk out of that one groaning “You’re making me look a cunt, Ken” will forever be a mystery.

Respectfully disagree, sir. As a history lesson Lisztomania is as mad as a bag of hammers, but it’s true to the spirit of the facts, where else would you find out that Wagner was a vampire, Liszt had a ten foot long cock and Ringo Starr was The Pope? You could say that just because Ken could show those things didn’t mean he had to, but how can you resist a film with the line “Piss off, Brahms!”
