Sean’s Last Show, Sunday, 22.00, BBC Radio 4 Extra

If comedy ever was the new rock’n’roll, we can perhaps cite Sean Hughes as the Cliff to The Mary Whitehouse Experience’s Beatles, because about 25 years ago he was absolutely the most fashionable comedian of all, probably the first with a proper love and appreciation for modern pop music and able to make jokes about it from a fan’s perspective – as opposed to Spitting Image’s sneering at pop culture. Unfortunately Sean never became the big star everyone thought and hoped he might be, spending a bit too long phoning it in on Buzzcocks and then dying tragically young last year. Eighteen months before that he’d made his last radio show for RTE, and while he was clearly in poor health it’s still recognisably Sean, broadcast in the UK for the first time.
