Sainsbury’s: 150 Years on the High Street, Monday, 21.00, Channel 5

One of the great sadnesses about the homogenisation of the High Street in recent years is that you don’t get the excitement while on holiday of visiting a supermarket you didn’t have at home, and we certainly recall the thrill of going to our first ever Safeway. What with that and the chance to see the likes of TSW, we can’t imagine what today’s kids find to amuse themselves while they’re away. You may have seen the celebrations regarding Sainsbury’s century and a half, not least their archive tweeting lots of fascinating images from their past, and now here’s Channel 5 to celebrate all that and ponder how they can survive for another 150 years while positioned squarely in the middle of the road. Wonder if we’ll get a chance to see the notorious John Cleese ad campaign that was so bad it was scrapped within weeks.
