Lenny Henry’s Race Through Comedy, Tuesday, 21.00, Gold

Lenny Lenny Len is doing the promotional rounds at the moment, what with his autobiography which should be well worth a read and his tour to support it, and now he’s fronting this fascinating-sounding new series. The Lenny Henry Show was a popular series in the eighties and you forget how radical for primetime BBC1 to have a comedy show with such an obvious black slant. This series, running over the next three nights, will explore how black and Asian culture has featured in TV comedy over the past half century, starting tonight with sitcoms. Obviously that means the likes of Curry and Chips and Mind Your Language, which we’ll get here, with the likes of Michael Grade on hand to point out that, whatever their good intentions, they just weren’t very good programmes at all, and they may not show them much these days (although lots of them are on DVD), but they don’t rush to show many other, equally bad seventies sitcoms either.

Lovely to see Lenny getting laughs from his Tommy Cooper and Frank Spencer impressions on The Graham Norton Show the other week. Still got it!
