The theme for Grandstand was an “off the shelf” track so the BBC didn’t have exclusive use of it.

That short film about rollercoasters narrated by Vincent Price is a good example of hearing a common theme in the wrong context & being totally confusing when you were young.

The BBC seemed to ofthen dig this out if there was a gap in schedules.

On the subject of hearing a common theme tune out of place, a few years ago my other half had to write some words to be used as the voiceover for a scientific video on ‘The Life of a Sperm’. The background music used for part of the film was the theme from Dave Allen’s comedy shows. Out of context and very funny!

Gave my vote to Magpie – since I’m still a bit miffed that the ‘stand won the sports category by as much as it did (while my choice, World of Sport, came fourth), and since it’s probably going to win this particular vote fairly comfortably as well.

I’ve nothing against it, mind you. If it did take the title (and it must be one of the favourites), I would consider it very worthy of it.

And I’m amused by its use in the short rollercoaster film that Richard has linked to.

Any theme up against Grandstand is on a hiding to nothing really!

The America Screams is all wrong! Although nice to hear the full-length version at the end.
But our transatlantic editing-cousins haved missed a trick… the lad banging the mallet on fair-ground strength-tester thing should have clearly been in time with the timpani!

I’ve been spending a lot of time on YouTube NFL Films music playlists recently. Yes, the long winter evenings must just fly..

Anyway, the NFL have been making use of fantastic library music for ages, including the themes from Grandstand, Superstars, Wimbledon, Dave Allen, Channel 4 News, to name but a few.

Well worth a look if this kind of thing floats your boat.

Grandstand for the win of course. And a nod to the Motors as well.
