Look at his face! Just look at his face! Because it’s week six of…

TV Cream’s Most Unforgettable Theme!

Here we are with unarguably the four strongest themes yet to do battle. Although, we have to admit, we haven’t been able to procure the golden era World of Sport theme, thanks to the baffling fact someone has actually gone to the trouble of ensuring it’s copyright protected on Soundcloud. Nonetheless, we do like the rather stately version above, but you can still hear the more familiar banners-in-the-sky take at the end of this link.

This poll will close on 4 December 2014 at 1700. And it’s the last one we’re running for this year. New theme battles will commence in January!

Had to be World of Sport because that’s the only one I watched, though it was always worth tuning in to Ski Sunday for the first couple of minutes just for the theme tune. The Sportsnight theme I will always associate with Vic Reeves chasing Bob Mortimer.

The Grandstand theme was also used an American programme about rollercoasters narrated by Vincent Price, which seemed to be high on the BBC’s “something to show when there’s a spare slot” list for years.

I remember the opening montage of the Grandstand always seemed to sync something to fit the bass drum bit of the theme.

Is it a figment of my imagination or was the version played over the end credits slowed down slightly? probably so all the OB teams could be fully credited.

    Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain”.
    ‘Nuff said.

The Grandstand theme also got used on an NFL video about the Pittsburgh Steelers. And we get the full Monty with the guitar solo in the middle.

Such a difficult choice. As you say, Sportsnight has special connotations about staying up late for something special – in my case, probably show jumping or the Grand National preview. Ski Sunday is the sound of Sunday tea time as well.

Was Superstars under consideration here or can it be crowbarred into another category? I’m not having it ignored altogether!

The BBC cricket had an ace theme tune. I think it was “Soul Limbo” by Booker T & The MGs.
There is also Fleetwood Mac’s “Chain” for the Formula 1 racing.

The Granada football show, Kick Off, also had a great theme (see link below).

Altogether: Elton Welsby is a wanker! Is a wanker!

Four absolutely brilliant themes – but the WoS one gets my vote, as WoS was the only show of the four to end before I was born.

There was also Winnie Atwell’s “Black & White Rag”
Theme tune to the legendary Pot Black.

The World Of Sport theme was the best. Always preferred Dickie Davies and Brian Moore to Frank Bough and Motty.

Four brilliant themes, I voted for ‘Grandstand’ as I’ve always loved the theme tune in particular, but the other three run it close. I’d like to put in a word here for the theme from ‘Superstars’ although I know it’s not technically the same category, it is sports-based, and it’s another top theme tune.

Got to admit, I’m quite surprised that the Grandstand theme is winning fairly comfortably.

It *is* probably the most familiar theme of the four – but I honestly thought that that would count *against* it.

After all, the News at Ten theme – elements of which have been used in every ITV News theme since 1995, of course – was comprehensively beaten by “Jam for World in Action”, while The Bill’s theme was out-polled by The Sweeney’s by nine to one…
