TV: W is for...

Worldwise

DAVID “RAPIDLY LOSING HIS KID LICENCE” JENSEN hosted this bizarre geographical quiz from atop a crane-mounted armchair which floated over the studio, for absolutely no reason at all. The object of the game was to circumnavigate the globe (“you must cross the equator twice!”) quicker than the other team of generic T-shirt-colour-coded sullen ’80s kids. A large luminous map and early CGI was used to bring this desultory vision to life.

My brother really liked this, there seemed to a stock number of challenges, such as loading a suitase without going over a certain weight.

Later on it had a revamp & was presented by someone else, & wasn’t as good.

Emma Freud, I think? I liked it too and with a friend, actually applied to go on it. Don’t think we heard anything back so the buggers have still got my photo.

There was also the rule that you had to cross the International Date Line. I had nary a clue what the IDL was, mind…

WW was the first time I had heard of places like The Galapagos Islands, Winnipeg, Tomsk (not counting The Wombles), The Azores.

Another challenge was to wheel a load of heavy luggage accross the studio on an airport trolly without knocking into any of the many shop dummies randomly placed about.
