Saturday Starship

AND AGAIN with the Boydster. Here a bubblepermed Tommy burbled his way about a “futuristic” studio which was also a spaceship (see GET FRESH, MAGIC MICRO MISSION) with th’execrable BONNIE LANGFORD flouncing about in back. Mission implausible.

The only thing I remember about this show was that the producers had obviously told the guests and presenters on pain of death to impress as much as possible on viewers’ young minds that the show was beamed from an actual starship and NOT a tv studio (they must have also been the ones behind getting just under half of the American voting population to elect Whitehouse Wiggy as President). This was obvious because one of the presenters (or regular correspondents) was live on location somewhere and ended his bit with the illusion shattering words:”Back to the studio.”. The show went to break and a contrite Tommy Boyd, after clearly having had a rather unpleasant talking to in those 3 minutes from a producer or director or whatever, looked down the camera when the ads were over and apologised profusely for his colleague’s “mistake” because the show was most definitely NOT in any tv studio, it was in a ship in outer space, that’s why the show is called Saturday Starship and not Saturday “Studio”. Just in case that little faux-pas had upset any kiddie winkies who actually believed everything was beamed from a ship in space.

Just Googled for this and I know I’ve not seen it for 35 years. It brings back no wash of nostalgia but I’m happy shows like this were here for the only real way I was able to absorb pop culture at the time, outside the playground.

This episode featured Motorhead, which I must have loved if I saw it (as I probably did, watching the Saturday morning telly religiously). But looking back, Lemmy and the gang seem a bit incongruous for such a young audience.
