Pop Quiz

DUNUNUNUNUNUH-DUH NUH! “POP QUIZ!!!” A crisply bouffoned MIKE READ hunkered down behind a giant desk of a Saturday teatime to host this steady-as-she-goes bland panel game ‘twixt two teams of mini-celebs of the day, e.g. Fish, bloke off Red Box, maybe Noddy Holder, perhaps a rogue member of Bananarama. Missing lyrics, video clips, backwards songs etc. Perfect for eating your tea to.

Like The Old Grey Whistle Test this made much use of random clips from old cartoons to accompany songs without a video.

I guess it was either that of lots of slow pans over the faces of the panel.

I managed to get hold of a set of the board game from when some relatives had a clear-out a few years ago.

Mike Read always looked like Cliff Richard’s younger brother and this wasn’t unnoticed at the peak of Read’s career. Pop Quiz was always a good watch, as it had two panels that would contain a current pop star like Limahl next to some rock dinosaur like Robert Plant, but there was never animosity between the new wave and the old guard and it was interesting to see how well a current star would do when asked about some early seventies prog track and an old timer being asked about The Smiths.

Those Aviator style sunglasses were popular with both, which helped the resemblance.

I remember this was briefly brought back in the 1990s, but only for a season or so. Also A Question Of Pop around the turn of the Millennium was basically A Question Of Sport with musical questions. The Home Or Away round became A Side / B Side.
