TV: I is for...

Innes Book of Records, The

PYTHON IMPOSTER and ex-Rutle presents ragbag of self-penned songs accompanied by cheapo prototype video clips, which promises much but delivers only sporadically. Much like The Rutles. And all other Innes/Idle tomfoolery (RUTLAND WEEKEND TELEVISION for starters). Highlights: UFO Shanty, with Innes in blackface and full Tom Baker regalia performing with a scout jamboree, complete with multi-lingual bouncing ball subtitles; and the Gallagher-nicked How Sweet To Be An Idiot accompanied by some condom-headed performance art.

I watched the first episode again recently and thought “Great! Why is this never repeated?” Subsequent episodes reminded me why it’s never repeated – it’s all a bit dull and not a little pretentious. And I say this with love, because Rutland Weekend Television was fantastic.

A lot of 70s music was also a bit dull and not a little pretentious. I credit Innes for presenting what amounts to a string of little video albums with all imagination he was able to muster, especially as the great man still has to tour to make ends meet. (Same with Rodney Bewes, presenting his little one man fireside chat-type tours all the way til he died.)
