Havoc

BIG FUCK-OFF bran tub of real-life disasters and, erk, proper deaths from around the world, narrated in pitiless hammy detail by GLENN FORD and LEONARD NIMOY. Staple fare: two blokes seen being lifted by a rope on an airship to height of several hundred feet, before stupidly “plummeting to their deaths”. Guarantee of half dozen racing accidents – cars, dragsters, boats – before episode’s conclusion. Bunged out late at night, in deliberate move to give kids who shouldn’t have been watching shit-scary nightmares.

There was actually a string of ‘Havoc’ videos in the early eighties, just about all the video libraries around here had stacks of them until the video recordings act of 1984 came along and either “changed everything for the better” or “spoiled all the fun”, depending on your point of view. Then ‘Faces of Death’ came along and trumped them all, by showing an actual beating heart in a pinned-open chest cavity during a real life operation in the opening few seconds.

Not to be mistaken for the outfit who arranged many of the stunts for Pertwee-era Doctor Who.
