WHO’S THAT walking down the street? CLIVE DUNN resurrected the DAD’S ARMY schtick as accident-prone caretaker CHARLIE QUICK, forever in trouble with the council and pet parrot “The Captain”. Allegedly, he would protect you in a storm. If you were cold, he’d – ominously – “make you warm”. Would volunteer to mow your lawn, whether you wanted it or not. Minus points: often went quick when the band went slow, and was prone to riding a bike in a rodeo. Played the pianner in the strangest manner, too.

When I was a kid I wondered what “and jecannid feet” were in the theme tune, thinking it was a medical condition. Turns out Clive was singing “educated feet”.
Apart from Nero the dog which you never saw but always heard, and the drinks machine that always went wrong, I most remember the episode where Grandad went swimming and thought a shark was after him. It turned out to be an upturned toy yacht. Most convoluted Jaws spoof ever.

About the funniest episode of Grandad was when Charlie accidently mowed a carpet & while attempting to restore the pile with some glue got his boss’s had stuck on his head & ended up tearing the brim off.
The pedal powered lazy susan was another crazy set piece.
