Get Up and Go!

TITULAR INSTRUCTION obeyed to the letter by kids the country over as soon as they got whiff of this noneducating small tottery with green puppet Mooncat learning about council estates and Golden Syrup courtesy of a faceless bloke and a dignity-shedding BERYL REID. Hand up moggy’s arse belonged to David “ROLAND RAT” Claridge. Fetid feline would transport colleagues to mystery location (invariably a field) with hair-raising 80s electro-esque cry. Later rebranded as Mooncat And Company. The kids weren’t fooled.

This gained immortality through that clip of the “faceless bloke” starting to tell the regular story: “One day, Billie and the animals were in the gard-” KER-AASH!!! went the shelving unit as it collapsed behind him.

He probably made more out of that outtake getting repeated than he did for the whole series.

Just saw the presenter, whose name is Stephen Boxer, perform rather brilliantly in the play ‘Anjin-The Shogun & the English Samurai’at the Sadler’s Wells, London. Nice Cream tie in as it’s a more accurate version of ‘Shogun’,the 1980 Richard Chamberlain mini-series. Moon Cat gets a mention in the program notes.

The ‘faceless nobody’ is now playing Denis Thatcher in ‘The Crown’.

I remember this being a pre-school favourite of mine, especially when Mooncat got to visit interesting places like the factory where smarties are made.
