Chocky/Chocky’s Children/Chocky’s Challenge

La Drinkwater: "Whats *wrong* Matthew? Stop it! Stop it!"ADAPTED FROM John Wyndham books that nobody read, this was the story of various “quiet” children who came into telepathic contact with a geometrically-shaped alien resembling those computer bits in The Demon Seed, which then promised unlimited energy or something. Inevitably, nasty grown-ups wanted to exploit it. ANDREW ELLAMS played the (gasp) middle class kid. ED BISHOP, MRS JAMES HERRIOTT and that one from THE BOX OF DELIGHTS looked in. Much namechecking of Atari games consoles and Rubik cubes. Doddery aunt character called, by law, Aunt Cissie.

I read it. It’s John Whyndam for God’s sake. Everyone should read him.

A bit too scary for me in its first incarnation but I enjoyed Chocky’s Children even if I found the concept of Albertine faintly ridiculous.

Nobody has read Wyndham’s novels Chocky’s Children and Chocky’s Challenge, to be sure: he never wrote them. Only the first series is adapted from a Wyndham novel.

I watched Chocky when it was first shown.

One thing I remember, was that Matthew got kidnapped. He was taken to some house in the English countryside.

This had a ‘mysterious’ electronic gate.

I think that this house was also used in the Famous Five TV series made in the late 1970s.

If you buy the DVD you’ll find it hasn’t weathered too badly in the last thirty years though
Carol Drinkwater plays a very stereotypical mum seen in the kitchen in almost every seen washing up or doing some cooking.

I got quite excited when I heard Stephen Spielberg was to do a movie version of Chocky. The rumours started in 2008 but the last I can see about it on the web was in 2011 when reports said the development was ongoing.

It would be a perfect modern tale as it’s about creating clean renewable (cosmic) energy collected up by rays from outer space.

Didn’t Bayleaf from London’s Burning play the kid’s dad?
