Cheggers Plays Pop

"Okay, time for another smashing number..."THIS IS more like it. Sub-Pinball Wizard fanfare was the cue for our man to bound, literally, onto camera, do a little skip and go “Yessss!” by way of an introduction to this neverending rock’n’inflatable roustabout. Two teams of two kids in matching T-shirts then answered pop trivia which’d shame Mike Read (“Name two members of the Human League”) before taking a break for the latest from Bad Manners while the BBC back room boys pumped up the bouncy castle. Ending always involved forty gallons of foam and a car hooter. “See you next time!”

I think this started in 1977 not 1979. Punk rock was conspicuous by its absence with groups such as The Dooleys( family group similar in sound to the Nolans) being regulars on the show and later Bucks Fizz were regarded as royalty after winning the Eurovision. Still not a bad little show which was like a junior TOTP and well liked by its audience. Jokily had the nickname of Cheggers Smokes Pot.

Keith Chegwin once revealed that he had to sew the pockets of his trousers up when he was hosting this show because the kids on the set used to try and pick his pockets.

Glenn @1 is right. Because that bit of the Top 10 charts that Keefy is standing in front of is from (guessing off the top of my head by the relative positions of Kate Bush and The Sweet) end March 1978.

Such an unwieldy combination – part school sports day, part obstacle course, part music programme, part pop quiz – shouldn’t have felt this seamless, neither should it have made perfect sense (or worked at all, really), but it did, and it was fantastic. All but one episode remains in the BBC archive, which begs the question – why hasn’t it been repeated anywhere, ever?
