Arthur C Clarke’s Mysterious World

DOTTY SCI-FI guru and thing inventor introduced this “crazy world” series from his plush Sri Lankan retreat, linking clips of Bermuda triangles, Loch Ness Monsters and Peruvian UFO runways in the usual dry manner. Glass skull thing span around in the titles. THE GOODIES did nifty send-up. Market later cornered by the likes of Frost and Vorderman.

There’s a bit in the Adam and Joe Book suggesting things you could do while in the house on your own of an evening, and one of them was “Scare your tits off”, where you could watch a video nasty or a documentary on UFOs or ghosts. I like to think for the latter, Arthur’s series (there were 3) were what they had in mind. That music!

A spooky series for sure. The one that stayed with me was an episode about a group of Swiss explorers in South America during the 1920’s who said they were attacked by a strange species of upright apes that they claimed were the Missing Link. They shot one dead and took a photo of the creature, and tried bringing the body back to Europe but their boat sank with the ape on board. It’s since been claimed to be a hoax and that what they encountered was just a Spider monkey. Even so, the photo they took of the dead ape propped up on a packing box and staring into camera still gives me the chills. Google image search De Loy’s Ape and see what I mean!

It’s a classic photo, unfortunately De Loys and his pals were a massive racists with a “white people are the master race and this proves it!” agenda. Plus there’s nothing to judge the ape’s scale by.
