DON SPENCER (king of charabancs and the FIREBALL XL5 theme) took time off from PLAY SCHOOL and the dreaded HOKEY COKEY to bung together this half-hearted HEADS AND TAILS wannabe plus dreary animation. Less than sparkling on a Wednesday afternoon.

My daughter was around 2-5 years old when ‘Animal Fair’ was shown on the BBC. And she LOVED it. She is now 24 and still has happy memories of the programme. So don’t be so quick to make judgements. It’s a pity that children’s programmes today aren’t as good – also, that so few mothers take the time to watch with their kids.

Things I learned from the great Don Spencer (part one) – you can really annoy people by singing “monkey monkey monkey” ad nauseum.

The last I heard of Don Spencer, he’d gone back Down Under and got a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo role in mid 80s Aussie Dynasty wannabe Return to Eden.

Spencer is of course Russell Crowe’s father-in-law (one of my favourite pieces of offbeat celebrity trivia)…

I remember at primary school one class tried recreating the lyrics in costume, which went OK until the boy playing the monkey couldn’t slide down the board connected to the wall bars because his shorts were too rough.
