She's a lezzer, he's got father issues, he's too committed to truly go commerical, he's a womaniser...ALL ABOARD THE INTERNET for Tony Garnett’s www-based drama set in the heady world of a start-up company which, bafflingly, seemed to think you could make money just by putting ‘content’ online. In this, the DOTCOMEDY era of “send us your JPEGS” and “Do you know how we can get clearance for the use of the Rhoobarb theme?”*, it followed the fortunes of the keeping-it-real Mike and Luce and their office full of variously sexually orientated n’er do wells. Featured David Walliams, of course, and Andrew Sachs as David Walliams’ dad. Plus ‘cyber sex’ (do people still say that?) twixt Luce and going-native ‘suit’ Will. Second series saw a slight reformat – half-hour episodes – and Mike’s exit. Its lasting legacy is the they-actually-built-it website seethru.co.uk, which is still online now (heh heh, ‘weblog’, they truly were different times) and their link to the old TV Cream.

* Eh, former TV Cream list faithfuls, circa 2000?

I bought three episodes of this in a charity shop last year. In some ways it now looks like a documentary.

I watched about two thirds of the first season of this, before I realised that there were absolutely no likeable characters at all. None. There were some at the start, but they all became either boring or hateful by about halfway through, until watching it was like constantly attending a weekly get-together of people you barely know and don’t like, purely out of a sense of duty. Shame, really, because it had potential, but the game was up around about the time the extraordinarly hateful blonde post-coitally threw up on the Robert Webb lookalike in the kitchen, in one the grimmest sex scenes I’ve ever seen. In fact, it was almost as though they felt they had to balance out the gorgeousness of Claudia Harrison by making all the remaining sexual content half as arousing as unblocking a sink in a dingy apartment in Rygate during a thunderstorm.

Seethru itself was a decent website though, because it’s done by former UberFragMeister David McCandless and contains material from some of his imperial-phase PC Zone cohorts (include Charlie Brooker)

I’m ashamed to say, I did watch the opening five minutes of this with salacious intent when the Daily Mail TV guide said it kicked off with a steamy sex scene. However, given that it was just a bog-standard bit of sex mixed in with someone skateboarding naked across their office to type on a computer, I quickly did something less grubby and went to the pub instead.

Can’t believe they got two series out of this. The five minutes I saw persuaded me that there was nothing to see here.

I remember one of the programmers in it looked just like Shaggy off Scooby Doo..
